It is hardly possible to count the entire number of frogs this planet can offer. Research recently conducted on the Island of Sri Lanka has revealed over 100 previously unknown species of frogs. The research site occupied only a 466 square mile patch of tropical rainforest, a microscopic swath of earth's surface by astronomic standards. So far it is the only part of the tropic rainforests so thoroughly studied.

According to Steve Donnellan, South Australian Museum researcher, three new species have been discovered in Australia, two in the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges, and one more - at Mambray Green. Two new frogs have been identified on Aegean islands of Crete and Karpathos.

Researchers work around the clock to prevent species of frogs from total extinction. In Arizona, biologist and volunteer teams have caught and released more than 400 Tarahumara frogs that are on the brink of extinction. In the U.S. they are believed to have disappeared back in 1980 and could only be found in Mexico.

All species of frogs have suffered a substantial drop in number. For example, the area populated with Red-legged Frog has shrunk by nearly 15%. Although the species is not yet viewed as threatened, this tendency persists.

Here are some remarkable species of frogs that are considered endangered or vulnerable: Spotted tree frog, Golden Bell Frog, Southern Bell Frog, Olongburra Tree Frog, Blue Mountains Tree Frog.

Monverde Golden Toad, Western Toad and Gastric Brooding Frog are also some that were numerous until recently and are known to be gone by now. Western frogs and toads have been stricken by an infection that has ruined their immune system.
